POST-DISHCARGE SURVEILLANCE IN SURGICAL SITE INFECTION: VALIDATION OF AN INSTRUMENT

ABSTRACT Objective: to create and validate an instrument for detecting potential cases of surgical site infection through post-discharge telephone surveillance. Method: a methodological study using psychometric analyzes develop conducting surveillance infection. Results: the had total content validity coefficient equal 0.87. It was applied sample 100 patients compared medical nursing physical examination detect infection, resulting in satisfactory Cohen’s kappa (0.83), Cronbach’s alpha (0.87) Comparative Fit Index (0.998). The difference between time spent on calls positive statistically greater than negative (p <0.001). Sensitivity 76.4%, with specificity 100%, predictive values 92.5%, 100% accuracy 94%. Conclusion: validated content, criteria constructo stages.

We assessed 4045 ambulatory surgery patients for surgical site infection (SSI) using claims-based triggers for medical chart review. Of 98 patients flagged by codes suggestive of SSI, 35 had confirmed SSIs. SSI rates ranged from 0 to 3.2% for common procedures.
